I would've left them in, and just popped my way into the driver's seat. Relying on vision to drive is overrated, I do it strictly audibly all the time.

Firetruck? That is random, I remember when I was in elementary school we had a fire safety person come. We all got in a trailer and they filled it with smoke and we had to practice crawling low to the ground. That doesn't seem too safe for little kids.
