We simply lie down in bed, preferably alone, just as if we're going to sleep. If conditions allow it, our head can be aligned towards the north. We lie in the position known as the corpse posture - flat on our back, with arms at our sides and legs stretched out, heels almost touching and our feet relaxed in the shape of a fan. Simply wait. Wait for the physical body to fall asleep by itself. We remain alert and watch. Sooner or later, whether it be a half hour or longer, we will fall asleep. The body will have to fall asleep.
The body is not the real you. Your mind is not the real you. The brain is not the real you. We need to begin thinking differently about ourselves. We are not the body. The body is a vehicle for the real you and the real me. In other words, you are putting the physical body to sleep, while retaining full consciousness. In a state of self awareness, self-remembering and self observation, waiting and watching for the body to fall asleep. Sooner or later, we will reach a point, a state that we call the threshold of consciousness. When you reach that state, you are fully conscious and fully aware, you are able to realize for yourselves that one step further, and you are soundly asleep and one step backward and you are wide awake.
You know you have reached that state when you being to hear a sound, a very sharp, very fine "iiii". It is a sound produced deep within your brain cells. In yoga, it is called the sound of Anahat. It actually originates from the Anahata chakra, the heart chakra. The word Anahata means "the one who has not been knocked." In other words, the sound that is produced without the need of two objects being hit together. It is in part due to the movement of the atoms of the body and the brain and the different energy centers of the body that produce this note and we can all hear it. It is similar to the sound produced by the cricket.
As we lie in bed, this sound increases in volume and intensity. You will hear it so loudly, inside your brain and possibly in your entire body. You may feel that your body is shaking, that the bed is shaking, etc. All that is happening is that the atoms of the astral body and physical body, the molecules are being accelerated in their motion to allow the separation of the astral vehicle from the physical body. You have gone through this every night, except we have gone through it so fast, it has gone unnoticed.
Once the sound has increased in volume and intensity, you get up from bed, slowly sit up in bed, stand up and jump with the firm intention of floating. You need to actually get up and not imagine it. You will feel that you are actually getting up with your physical body but you are not. When you jump, you will float. Do not worry about the physical body. Nature will take care of separating the astral body from the physical body. You will be able to see and hear even if the room is dark. You can now move around, go through the ceiling or the door. Visit a friend or fly slowly over the city. If we succeed, what we see is verifiable. However, these conscious experiences should not be mere projections of the subconscious. They can bed. Lots of times, they are. And therefore, we need to develop objectivity in our experiences.
