Post What is Hedonism

Nøz is offline
Hedonism (Greek: hēdonē (ᾑδονή from Ancient Greek) "pleasure" + –ism) is a philosophy that focuses on increasing pleasure. Note that while the terms were originally employed literally, this is no longer the case. There seems to be no common ground on what actually constitutes pleasurable or painful activities. The hedonistic philosophy usually has a sexual or libidinal connotation.

well God I'm a hedonist.
I heard that word for the first time on Futurama.. with a robot who was being fed grapes..

and 2 weeks later I had to write my senior research paper on the topic.

If all Hedonism is is increasing pleasure I believe it's possible even somebody who lives a morally respectable life could be considered a hedonist. By choosing not to do certain things in order to stay out of prison he does so to increase his pleasure. Or is hedonism more of a "living for the moment" type of thing? I've never heard of it before so I'm just curious.

Ooh! Or better yet, Jesus could be considered a hedonist. I'm sure he loved to see people happy so by making others happy he increased his own pleasure!

No, Jesus was not a hedonist. He vouched for "praying in private," rather than seeking the praises of men. The praises of men would be considered a pretty immediate pleasure, as hope of paradise would be simply hope, which cannot be included in an equation describing an earthly sensation. Something like that. Unless the statement was facetiously spoken..

Yes, but by praying in private he does what he believes is right- therefore bringing him pleasure by fulfilling his moral beliefs.
