At the very least he takes on a "The Bible is largely figurative" approach.
I'd like to point out... going on from his 'King David led some number of Israelites and had a relationship with God' comment... do you know how many cultures have claimed their chief/king has had a relationship with the supernatural? It's pretty much a hallmark.
Even today, people say 'God is with our President/Prime Minister'.
I'll also add that my great uncle, a Lutheran minister, maintains that everything in the Bible is entirely literal. Down to a day being a day (24 hours).
Nevermind that the Earth is spinning slower than it used to, and what would have been a day 6,000 years ago is closer to 18 hours than 24.
Logic hole #1.
Unfortunately, I wasn't in any appropriate position to debate it with him... he was playing host to myself and my family as we were on our way West to a family reunion.
Even my father, who is such a devout Christian himself, had problems with my great uncle's explanation.
