the pledge.

I didn't really know what board this should go on... so I just posted it here.

I know that the pledge isn't required at school anymore, however they still do it at my school (and most schools that I know of...) Anyway, a few weeks ago at school some kids came in late and they were told to get their things out and as soon as they started doing it, they announcements came on, and them being busy putting stuff up and getting papers/books out, they didn't stand for the Pledge right away.

My teacher jumped their ass for it.

Now, my dad was in Vietnam, I've had a lot of people in service that are in my family, so out of respect, I stand up and put my hand over my heart... I don't believe in God but that part has never bothered me that much because I have more important things to do than argue with other Atheists about theEstablishment Clause, but anyway... It's not that hard to stand up for ten seconds and just do it and feel better about myself.

Basically, she wrote them up for it and kicked them out of class... for not standing up. She has done this before when other kids didnt stand up, not because they were doing something, they just wanted to be punks and obviously they think it makes them look cool to not stand up, I dunno. I missed that memo. Since when does it make you badass not to support your country?

But that's not what I'm mad about. What I am mad about, is that no where, in anything, does it say you have the right to kick a child out of class for not standing up for the pledge... so basically she had no right to do it. And IMO, I think when you take away someones right to stand up for the flag, basically, you're just taking away what the flag symbolizes in the first place: freedom. I felt the same way when they took away the right to burn a flag in protest. Because you're taking away rights that deal with something that was made to symbolize freedom and our rights... does that make sense?

And then I'm mad because some kids actually don't stand up... and I think it's stupid. I UNDERSTAND that a lot of kids don't believe in God. I understand that a lot of people aren't 100% happy with our government ATM, nor do they support the war in Iraq. But when you can't stand up for something as simple as a flag.. honestly, I just have to stop and think, what in the severe fuck? I think it's pathetic to make such a big deal over standing up for the pledge because you're pledging allegience to the flag, the country... not God. So if you want to live here get your ass up and say it for fucks sake. It's not that hard and nobodys going to think you're not badass anymore for doing it.

Atleast you have the freedom to come to school and get the chance to stand up for it... if you don't like taking a few seconds each morning to stand up, feel free to move to another country...

So, what is everyones opinion on that? It's more just about respect and supporting our country... and remembering how many people died for our freedom... I stand up because my dads life was cut short because of him serving in Vietnam... It's always more about respect to me then some lameass bullshit about not believing in God.

I looked at that and it was more about whether or not god should be in the pledge... not actually whether or not you stand up for it... but sorry.

I believe in God, but I still won't stand for the pledge.

I won't pledge my life to a piece of fabric that represents a broken nation.

Because we have 400 television channels and SUV's and 62" TV's?

Our economy is falling apart.

Our federal government is corrupt beyond measure (and it's creeping into state and local slowly as well).

over 80% of our wealth is held by less than 1%. those are demographics of a third world economy.

Our dollar has plummeted in slightly less than a century to 4 cents of it's worth in 1913.

We're entangled in a war we shouldn't have started, and now it's one we can't get out of. Now we want to to invade Iran. Meanwhile we leave a border wide open, despite the claim that millions of muslims are supposedly trying to kill us.

I'm not saying I'm not glad I'm here and not Baghdad (I am glad) but that doesn't make everything ok just because I'm getting by. If I'm going to still call myself America, which I do (for now), then I'm not going to sit idly by without protest of what this country is doing around the world.

Our government does evil evil things every day, and they are the representation of who we are to the world.

As one of their 300 million bosses, I'd like to say it's time we start sending out pink slips to washington.

I really get where you're coming from... and I havent really thought about it like that... I guess it's just different because I don't see the flag as representing that, I see it more like, I dunno, freedom... and if you really think about it we do have a lot of freedoms. But yeah, I totally get that and I can see now why you feel that way.

Oh I didn't mean to imply that we don't have Freedom. No one can ever take that away.

It's just that I can no longer view the flag as representing that due to what this nation has become.
