It's amazing the best of humans can accomplish stuff like this, when we see terrible things happening all the time, every day (most of the important stuff is brought up in this forum), it's feats like this that let you remember we can do some astrounding things if we try. Human potential is infinite.
This video pretty much sums up how I feel about the mission;
And I'm with you on the Mars weed! How nuts would that be!

I was just watching a video on youtube showing the crews reaction to the 3 or so minutes just before touchdown, just watching them I got a feeling of human accomplishment, I can only imagine what the feeling would be like to actually be involved in something like that! These guys are setting the foundations for humans to step on Mars in the decades to come. Moments like that, feelings like that, make life worth living.

I think we're going about space exploration the completely wrong way. I mean we landed on the moon.. and nobody's walked on it since 72 i believe. why are we not trying to set up like a base on the moon. like a bio-dome or something. did we give up on it? was it like hey we made it whats next? are we just tourists in the universe? I think we should definitely be searching for a way to make life habitable on the moon. And i think its great that we're trying to reach mars, but i also think that should have already been accomplished. after 40 years since the first moon landing we should be moving a lot quicker and trying a lot harder to explore the universe. at the rate we're going, it will be thousands of years till we get out of our own solar system. the universe is a big place. we should be doing everything we can to reach other planets in shorter periods of time. we're taking baby steps. and i understand we've made a lot of advances in space exploration, but i just don't think we've made enough.

I hear ya man, and I totally agree, it's just that space exploration hasn't been a top priority since JFK was in office, and that was only because somebody else was gunning for the title of biggest boss on the block, the USSR.
The majority of the population isn't concerned with space travel, to give you an example, as I am pretty interested in this topic, I was asking around, regular people I see everyday, if they would travel to Mars if they had the chance, and guess what the majority of the responses I got back sounded like after explaining all the specifics, likely a 5-6 year trip, millions of miles through space, 3-6 months to get there, "no way, I would never go to Mars! What for, why even bother, there's nothing there..." (you can probably imagine my utter amazement) You would be forever solidified in human history for one...
Anyway, I mean, we've got the moon base that's sposed to be operational with a year round crew by 2026 I believe, but I am definitely with you on the time scale thing...When I was a kid I used to think we'd be to Mars and far beyond in my lifetime, as I get older I think I'll be lucky if we even get that...

I think we should make use of the 70% of our planet's surface that is under the water before we move to other planets/celestial bodies.
Obviously, we wouldn't make use of ALL of the 70%, as there's a metric fuckton of organisms down there that don't deserve to be radically displaced, but we could easily do a large number of underwater cities around the globe.
I mean, yeah, in four or five thousand years they might be ground to bits as the oceanic plates subduct under the continental plates, but whatever. By that point we will probably have colonized Mars and the moon even though they don't actually have atmospheres or anything.

They could terraform the planets! I seen it done on TV! If it's on TV, not only is it possible, but it's true.

Well, if we'd quit wasting money on other aspirations then we might could be colonizing the moon.
