atheist story idea

I think it would be fun for me to write a short story about an atheist who takes a bullet for a christian and then goes to hell when he dies. Maybe I could make most of the story based off of his thoughts while he's in hell....maybe him at first regretting the fact that he wasn't christian but eventually coming to the realization the freedom of a non-theistic life was worth an eternity of eternal punishment from God.

anybody else have any ideas I could put in it?

That's a pretty Christian-themed plot, and one that negates any acceptance of the validity of modes of spirituality outside of Christianity.

I like the idea of that story. The idea that you take a bullet for someone that is Christian shows that you don't need to believe in a God to be a good person. The fact that the Atheist gives his life for a Christian and then is sent to hell makes the Christian God look evil. The fact that according to Christianity all Atheist would go to hell makes the storyline work out well. Someone could live a completely good life but if they didn't believe in the holy spirit they would burn. Sounds like a nice God to me.

I'd prefer a story of a Christian getting reincarnated, and realizing what a hoax his religion is.

I understand what you mean about it only showing the christian point of view, but I'm just emphasizing a major part of it in order to show what is wrong with it.

I've made up my mind a long time ago too that on the off chance that I found proof of the Christian God's existence I still wouldn't follow him.

How many readers do you expect would understand your point that their beliefs are hopelessly elitist in that they state that someone who leads a terrific life and performs good deeds in endless amounts will still go to hell if they don't believe in Jesus Christ?
To me that just seems like re-affirming their beliefs that they should shove their religion down the throat of anyone they care about.

I started writing a short story a while ago, but I haven't worked on it in months. It was set in a future I envisioned where Bush, shortly before his reign ended, nuked the middle east in retaliation for a percieved offensive, and triggered a mass uprising of the Christian faith (due to the centers of Islam and Muslim faith having gone to the shit). It featured an atheist professor who held a tedious position at Harvard university, teaching the history of religion at the permission of his cousin, a vehemently religious man who held the position of the Dean and was employing the main character because he was a fantastic teacher, but with the restriction that he had to keep his own religious alignment private.
Naturally, it was quite satirical towards such sayings like "God Bless You" when you sneezed or "God be with you" (which the modern 'Goodbye' derived from) (or "God speed").
I only made it a few chapters, and then I just set it aside in favour of some more pleasant literature.
