Is artistic talent genetic, or can it be perfected through practice and dedication?

My friend and I were having a debate about this subject, I was just wondering everyone else's opinions. So what do you think?

I was pursuing an art career through the enouragement of my art teacher and fellow classmates, so I have some talent, and everyone else in may family sucks... so I'd say it isn't genetic.

I just at drawing, while my mom and brother kick some major ass at it....hell, I failed first grade art....so my answer is no.

Well.. Everyone in my family is musically and artistically gifted..
But I also worked hard to get there..

It could be both, the gentetic thing could just be a jump start, all you have to do is work hard to get better at it. At least thats what I think, because thats what I did, and still doing.

i believe so

yes in the sense that if your mom has a creative mind, and your father has a creative mind, the child would probably turn out to be very creative and be very good in the arts. (all though this is not always true, just a high possiblity)

so yes it may be genetic, but think of this as well:

i cant draw for shit, i used to be able to but now i r teh sux0r. this goes to show that if u dont practice for it then your skills will degenerate to nothing, so even if u have the genes for it, if you waste it by doing nothing youll probably lose the ability to be truly artistic.

yeah, i think so. i knw this family who had generations of amazing artists and portraits they have drawn of each other in their houses. they are all good, and they all seem to have a distinct style so, it makes sense something about it is genetic, although there could be more than that as well.

i'd have to say it's a bit of both: my father was the music prodigy of the family - until i came along, now my brother rocks the guitar something serious, but my little sister does nothing artistic (to my knowledge).

it's all about what you work on, but i think natural talent gives you that extra oomph/spice to be better than someone who just works on it all the time... but then again, you have to work to be the best.

I think maybe it is... maybe more so a creative gene than one which actually says you will be artistic
I would love to be able to draw and make things well... but if i do they look like a 2 year old made them and im always copying things - i wouldnt be able to design something of my own
shame really, i envy people that can draw well

Artistic talent is both.
Some people just naturally have it and some people must be taught.

For example, my former art teacher never used to be an artist. However, she was determined to learn how to paint and worked hard at it. And now, she's one of the most talented artists I know.
She always used to tell people that you didn't have to be an artist already to join her class, but she promised that when you left the class you would be one. And it was true.

Just as with any talent, it can be natural or learned.

I think that genetics, in most cases, are what decide your abilities...though it could also be the environment you grew up in, though this may not always be the case. For example, I get most of my artistic ability from my mother, while my sense of humor, and sarcastic wit comes from my father, though neither of them are as...developed in their respective talents as I am

On the flip side, my brother has no artistic ability, nor does he have my sense of humor...or the ability to develop unique insults like me...hmm...
