what to do with the rest of my life
Ugh. The fact of the matter is that I have no idea what I want to do with the rest of my life. I’m not exhagerating either, when I say no idea, that is what I mean. Right now, I am working towards my bachelors degree in Agricultural Business, and I am about 90% sure I don’t want to do that. I bought the college board book of majors so I might have a better idea as to what I want to do, and that sort of helped me, but I am still just so confused. I have thought about going to school for things like Diagnostic Medical Sonography, college teaching, regional and urban planner, housing and human environments, and fashion merchandising. There are SO MANY things that interest me and I just don’t know how to choose one thing. I plan to change my major to the associates degree program when I return in the fall. I will then apply to different schools to try and get into one that may offer some degrees that interest me, but I still don’t know what I want to do. And I know that it’s “okay” or whatever, but I still hate the feeling of not knowing and I want to kind of plan things for the next few years of my life. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to get another book about majors and careers but it would have to encompass MANY different careers in order for it to be useful for me.
Someone, advise? Suggestions? Ideas for books that may help guide me?
Oh, and if you want to share, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?

hmmm I used to be exactly like that. Well, similar, I guess. There were a lot of things I want to do, and I had no idea which one to pick. I didn't look for any books though, or anything of that nature. First thing I did - just talked to my co-workers. Most of the are already done with their school degrees, and they were able to help me out a little. Then I just went to school close to me and asked - What do you offer. They laid it out for me, and I picked what I liked from a list. Also I took into the consideration the popularity and a possibility for advancement factor. Make sure you don't pick something you'll get stuck doing for the rest of your life because it doesn't relate to any other professions. Just be smart about it.

go to a community college and take a bunch of courses to weed out possibilities. and take some english courses because, no offense, there are a lot of misspelt words. but either way, that's what i did. and i'm glad i did it. i first wanted to do business law. then i changed it to economics. now i'm thinking of int'l business. because really, you dont want to go to a school like Duke, where their strong point is the medical field and try and maor in communicatons. you want to go to a school where they specialize, or, are famous for your major. but those are just my two cents...or three cents...i'm not really sure how that saying works; is it x cents for x amount of points? i dont know.

I am in college right now, working towards my associate's degree. The last thing I want to do is go to my community college to take classes. I don't want to waste any more time or money.
I work in a cheese manufacturing facility and there aren't any coworkers that have degrees.

Well don't feel like you're the only one, I AM EXACTLY LIKE YOU AND WORSE. You at least have a plan for next year I DO NOT. And I'm already going to community college and I still don't know what to do. First I thought I would become an architect, then I changed to a business major because I'm already working for my dad and the line of work he got me into I figured I would always be in even if I went to work for myself, but now I'm not even sure about that. It's just too overwhelming for me right now to decide what to do for the rest of my life. I don't want to be the person who one day realizes that I HATE MY JOB, but doesn't want to give it up because I spent 10 years in school preparing for that job that I now realize I CAN'T STAND. I honestly think I need to take a few years off from school to clear my head, but thats never gonna happen until I move out, and my parents may not realize this but the last two years of college have been a total waste of time for me, because I went in knowing I wasn't ready, but my parents were so persistent they didn't care to hear the truth....
God damn, why does life have to be so complicated?

yeah, right there with you on that one man. I kinda have a unique issue with the whole what to do with the rest of my life thing. I had this plan to join the Air Force and get some free education, earn a degree, become a pilot, advance in my career, because that's pretty much all you can do in the military, advance, unless you do something stupid. But anyway, the war sorta skewed my view on that whole plan, so now it seems like the last 6 years of my life, starting from 9th grade, have been a waste of time. I guess I'm still on that track, I figure it's 7 years away till I set foot in a jet, and that's kind of a long time, maybe the war will be over, so I'm just gonna stick to that path and hope it works out for me. The start of which consists of 87 units I have to earn at community college, engineering degree, then transfer, and get a bachelors.
As for the original poster, I think the best thing to do would be to prioritize what's most important to you, do you want to make a ton of money, do you want to have a blast doing your job, do you want to be close to family and have the freedom to travel, that kinda stuff, once you figure that all out, it kinda limits what your options for a career later on are, so that would probably help. Also, I always tell people to do something they like, because yeah, you may get into a job that offers a really good pay check, but sucks in the long run, where as you could get into a job that's decent paying, and you love doing. So you're probably more likely to stick with that job, and make more money in the long run. Just look at stuff logisticly and you should be fine. Don't think you've wasted any time, as long as you spent time in college learning new things, your advancing yourself as a person, and we're all still pretty young, most of us at the start of the prime of our lives, so live it up while you can, and don't stress out over things that you don't have to.

well if you go to a university, you wont be wasting money, you'll be saving hundreds, probably thousands of dollars. not to mention, in a CC, you can cancel out what you want to major in. because it sucks taking law classes, then finding out that you dont want to do it after all. b/c law is boring. and what if you dont want to study agicultural business? talk about a wate of time/money. but, what do i know.
lol do you smell like cheese when you're out of the factory, or are you know where near it.

College is basically a colossal rip off/marketing clusterfuck, unless you're somehow 100% sure you know what you want to "do." And even then they milk you for all you've got.
Take the time you need to find out what you're passionate about. Don't rush it, but actively explore the possiblities.

Wait, I enjoy Agricultural Business as my major, but I don't really see myself going into it anymore, it just got boring to me after growing up around it for my entire life. So I since I do enjoy it, I'm going to finish up my associates degree and then do something different for my bachelors.
And yes, when working on the cheese floor you smell like cheese... but you get used to it and can't tell after you've been there a while.
Now, I am starting to get really interested in the architecture and creating floor plans and stuff....

Well, this may be something completly random but useful...
I think that if you are this confused about what to do, I suggest taking a year off. BTW, are you from the U.S.? The reason why I'm asking this is because I can give you an idea for something you can do for the year you take off from school.
