Problem with AIM Phoneline

Does anyone here use AIM Phoneline?

I've been using AIM Phoneline for the longest behind a Linksys router with no problem whatsoever. I do undserstand that AIM Phoneline does have a problem in connecting to client machines that are behind a NAT but before I started experiencing this problem, all I would have to do was forward TCP port 5061 to my private IP address (which is a static IP to avoid any problems) and things would be just fine.

Here is where the problem starts. I recently ran a security update for AIM which upgraded me to the lastest version, 6.5.5.2. After that, I realized that every time I were to try and answer a call, the call would connect successfully but, the caller would not hear me, nor would I be able to hear the caller.

So, to make sure that I had everything running associated to the phoneline past my firewall, I first checked my rules on Zonealarm and made sure that AIM and it's components had unrestricted access to the net, which usually involves opening TCP port 5190, in addition to port 80 and 443. On my router, I made sure that IPsec, PPTP, and L2TP passthroughs were enabled and that the router's firewall was disabled. I also conducted several test calls to this number and found that calls would produce requests from several IP addresses, but with one similarity - the destination port for those requests would be port 21455. My firewall also reports requests from UDP port 21455. After noticing that, I forrwarded UDP 21455 to my system from my router to see if that would fix the problem. However, after testing that theory, my problems persisted.

In case anyone is wondering, yes, I did check my audio inputs and outputs to make sure that sound was going to where it was supposed to on my end.

Does anyone have any advice or any way to work around this pain in the ass of a problem?

Some additonal tests performed:

I decided to do one more test just for arguement's sake which was to execute a netstat /b command at the command prompt, just to see what port's are being listened to via AOL. There were a pair of ports that I eventually tried forwarding, which were TCP ports 3918 and 3919. None of them actually helped the issue.

I've temporarily stopped forwarding any ports related to AOL's VoIP service (TCP 3918-19 [based on hypothesis], and UDP 21455.

Oh good XP. Its fixable. It looks like the update may have messed with some configuration files. I know you have quite a bit to do with IT...so have you reinstalled AIM since it has been doing this?

AS you know, AIM phoneline is still a beta service alike. This is just AIM trying to combat with Skype. But, enough with the politics. Have you tried reinstalling AIM?

Also who is your Internet Service Provider?

I've tried everything possible, uninstalling, downgrading, reinstalling. Still the same problem.

But whah's this about them trying to combat skype with something that has trouble keeping reliable service through an NAT? lol, that's just funny.

My ISP is Optimum Online and I am running a business cable connection since I host a website, FTP server and 2 Windows Media Services stations from home (except, the site is on a remote server on their network).

lol No kidding. AOL just wants to jump on the VIOP wagon. Sadly at this rate I dunno if they'll be jumping on it or thrown off.

AIM phoneline has a designers forum but there is literally no one on it.

I've seen people with your problem, mostly on vista, but some on XP. It has do do with your router. I'm almost 99.9% positive. So when you answer it will it ever go strait to the voicemail?

No, when I answer, the call does connect but I don't hear the second party and they don't hear me at all.

Hmmm...does zone alarm ever pop up?

In all honestly there is a port your router is blocking. I'm quite positive if you ran it off the router it would probably connect. However, this may not be an option.

You opened all the ports that AIM uses which are 80 and 443. I'm really not sure just because of the successful connection yet nothing happens. All I can think of, is that either your ISP is blocking some ports or your router is configured wrongly. Either of those are probably not the case but that is all I can think of.

The ports that AIM usually uses are 80, 443, and 5190. Those are normally opened on the firewall and from the looks of it, don't need to be forwarded via the router. I checked with my ISP the last ime to see if they were blocking ports and they tell me that they only block ports on residential connections, specifically, inbound port 25 and port 80.

I even went so far as to recycle the power to my router and my modem to clear whatever dust it had. Nothing at all.

Oh, and nothing comes up on ZoneAlarm. Hell, I tried running without the Zonealarm too. And no, it's not really an option to run from outside of the router. I tried running from the DMZ too, no good.

Wow you really have run this thing down on foot.

It throws me, just because it was working fine until the update and dosn't work at all anymore. Its as if the program itself has a fault, because it was working fine with previous router settings.

Its more or less a dead end street as well. If AIM isn't to the latest update AIM Phoneline wont work. But if it is the latest update that is causing the failure well then....
