Vista...vista...hmm...Vista....Oh yea! That new version of Windows right?
Fughetaboutit, it sucks lol and I have many reasons why.
1.) It's a 1.0 technology
Meaning, a lot of the technology on Windows Vista is full of holes, full of vulnerabilities, or is not compatible yet with other software currently on the market. Plus, it makes for a host of new security vulnerabilities to exploit. Microsoft's new Teredo networking protocol, based on the latest version of TCP/IP 6 is just one example.
2.) Demand on current hardware
A lot of people are having to make upgrades on their existing machines in order to satisfy the demands of Vista.
3.) Problems with new hardware
Drivers compatible with the new kernel for Windows Vista are still somewhat hard to find because of how the kernel of Vista has been hardened and protected.
I can think of more reasons but, it's just not me on this forum lol

They've made the systems with vista so no other current OS will work on them. So if you bought one with vista, you're stuck with the shit. I have barely used it but I'm pretty sure that Vista = Windows ME...

I can't say I agree with Ginevra about not being able to use other OS'es on a Vista-equipped system. I have been using Vista for about a year now, and I'm content with it. I run OpenSUSE 10.X on a separate partition, in case anything were to ever happen. Needless to say, I've never had any reason to fall back on the SUSE partition. All of my programs work perfectly in Vista. PhotoShop, VisualC+, Audacity, Windows Movie Maker, many more.
Many people freak out when they compare the Vista resource monitor to the XP version when they see how much RAM is being taken up. The thing about that, is that it's putting idle RAM to good use for the OS, and it gives up RAM as needed by other programs. Of course, it uses more memory than XP, simply due to the advanced GUI (with all of the transparencies, blurring, fading, etc), but opening and moving around windows seems a lot smoother when compared to Windows XP due to the fact that it buffers all that in video memory, and even uses features of your videocard (or integrated graphics chip) to render the GUI.
Vista (with Aero enabled) runs perfectly fine on systems with at least 1gb of RAM and any 'ol dual-core processor. There's no reason anyone SHOULDN'T have at least those specs, as 1gb of RAM can be had for around $25 now.
I say give it a try. It may be in an early stage, but what OS hasn't been? Anyone remember XP in it's early stages? Same story, different book.
honestly, i think the people above me are on crack. with the exception of maybe a couple missing drivers Vista is actually really good (more than Macs as i've seen Macs crash plus a host of other problems than the Vista PC i'm using). everything i've used for it has worked and worked better than XP so far. compared to a year ago the OS has matured greatly. people here have not used it lately because it has gotten a lot better. Service Pack 1 is also not far off from being released so it's only going to get better.

The people above you, except me, right? I'm only asking because, ya know, I like Vista too. If you read my post, you'd know that. lol
It needs a super computer to run it, and even then cripples it more than anything...
I've had to do a few "downgrades" from Vista to Xp for people, because their laptops wouldn't function with it...
Once XP was back, everything ran 3 times as fast, and there were no problems...
Vista was a complete failure, and more reasons for people to go the free Linux route...
I pity anyone who actually paid 100's of dollars to downgrade to Vista...

That's bullshit. A supercomputer? Vista Basic will run beautifully on a PC with 512mb of RAM. Anything above that (with Aero turned on) runs perfectly awesome on as little as 1gb of RAM.
Perhaps people who own old laptops with inferior (by NOW'S standards) specs shouldn't be using Vista?
