Building (and repairing) Computers

Well, I just finished tearing down and rebuilding an old computer. And it worked afterwards! SO I figure the next step is to stop by a used parts store and really start from scratch, especially so I can get experience installing the OS and making sure everything's working properly.

So, I guess this thread is for discussion about this sort of thing. Questions, advice, stories, even brag about a machine you built or whatever.

Speaking of advice, as a beginner, I'm open to any.

Get a friend & do it together. I learned quite a bit from my friend, & would have learned more had I been there when he built it. Desktops are not that hard. I don't about laptops though. Does anyone know if laptops are easy to build or renovate?

If you can get your hands on parts that fit then they're pretty easy.

I'm sorely tempted to take a screwdriver to my new laptop, but it's better than my current desktop, plus I need it for school. I wish I could find some place with cheap old computers so I could really getting used to taking 'em apart and just mixing and matching.

People have old computers they want to get rid of, but don't want to pay to do so. If you put an ad in the paper you should get at least one or two.

I wouldnt screw with your laptop unless you know exactly what your doing, the simple things like, replacing keyboard, harddrive, ram on them is easy done as is changing the battery, but 9 times outta 10 if something fails like Motherboard, etc, ( where as on a PC ud replace the MB and all's good ) on a laptop unless its in warrently its cheaper to replace the entire laptop.

As for PC building, ive been doing it for years now, its not that its hard, its people just think omg look at all them connections and wires and get put off/confused, aslong as you have that motherboard book there, with all the jumper settings etc, your fine.

On a funny note, the clan i play for online, 1 of the members tried to build his own PC and put the DDR2 ram in the wrong way, any of you who have worked with DDR/DDR2 will know the slot on the ram for DDR2 is closer to the middle of the chipset rather than on the DDR where its way off to 1 side, we are still trying to figure out how he managed to force the ram into the motherboard without breaking it....
