Thumbs up Faith - Good or Bad?

1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.

2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.

Simple poll, open for discussion.

Way too generic. Faith can be either. Faith in yourself is good. Faith that a rock will keep you safe from tigers is bad.

It's all in how you apply it.

There's no way someone can be expected to vote on such a vague concept. Faith can be good and bad. You need faith in yourself to live your life, but faith in a higher power is something I believe is a burden rather than a blessing to humankind.

That's really all there is to say about it...

Is the idea of believing in anything without proof of it good or bad?

I don't think that definition of faith can be applied to 'having faith in yourself'.

I tried to simplify the question as much as possible, my bad if it's vague.

So yeah again, is it smart/good to believe in anything without proof or evidence of that thing first?

You left that out. It's a very important clause to add. Maybe you should amend your first post to include it.

Geez, it's a simple poll. Don't look too closely, just answer it.

That's easy to say if you are of the same opinion regarding both definitions.

So I noticed the poll has some votes and to my surprise, 3 of you guys think it is a good thing to believe in something without proof or evidence of it.

So someone start explaining...

If you can't have faith in something at some point without proof of it, you'll end up leading a pretty miserable life.

I have faith that my wife and I will remain married without fear of divorce. Can I prove that? Of course not, but I have faith in it. I have faith that I will be able to successfully complete my master's degree. I haven't done it yet, but I still have faith.

That is why faith in yourself is not any different. You have faith in yourself for things you have not yet proven to be capable of.

Most people here probably have faith in gravity, but quantum physics is beginning to suggest that we could be wrong about how it works.

Everyone has faith in something without proof. All we can really base faith off of is our own worldview and the evidence at hand.
