Cult test

Here is a little something I found at:
Operation Clambake presents

Quote:
Here is a simple test to tell if a group is a cult or not. Ask yourself these questions about the group:

1. Does the group use tricks, lies or excuses to get members and to keep them?
2. Does the group say that it is "better than all other groups", and is it organised so that people can't complain, discuss, vote, criticize, or change the group?
3. Does the group claim that the founder knows all the answers, and tolerates no discussion or questioning of his or her teachings?
4. Does the group say that nothing is more important than to get more money, people or anything else into the group, and that this is more important than honesty or friendship or families, maybe because it is such an emergency that the world must be saved right away?
5. Is the money collected used only a few "special people instead of for the members or the general population?

If you answered "yes" to all these questions, then the group is definitely a cult.

Wow, these are really good guidelines for determining a "cult" in the negative sense of the word.

The problem with the word cult is it gets thrown around way too easily without acknowledging that by a dictionary definition, EVERY RELIGION IS A CULT!

This is a much better measuring tool in regards to "cults" with the negative connotations implied to the word.

I did chuckle, in the sense that people actually need someone to spell this out for them.

I just meant like, I think it's a little arrogant to call Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses a cult as if they do anything worse than Christianity.

Scientology on the other hand....

Christians: If you don't believe in God, who won't appear to you because he wants you to have faith in him, you'll burn in hell.

Christians: Our God is the only God. By the way, if you so much as doubt anything the Bible says, it's an unforgivable sin.

Christians: All can be known through Jesus, who knew all things, as he is God and God is omniscient.

Christians: The Second Coming is not far, repent and be saved! Jesus alone can save you, not your mother or father, or your siblings, cousins, or friends. Also, we need some more donations to support Bush's campaigns... no, we don't get taxed... what's your point?

Christians: This money shall go towards maintaining our chapel, and supporting Bush.

I don't understand how you can be a "Christian" and not follow the Bible to the letter. What the bloody hell gives people license to pick and choose which parts are metaphorical and which parts are literal? Either you believe in the document's integrity, or you don't; anything else defeats the purpose of deferring to a supreme authority.
If I picked and chose which parts of the law were "real" and which parts were "oh they don't mean that", let's just say that there would be many more problems in my life.

So when I refer to "Christians", I am talking about people who are actually Christians, not people who fancy themselves Christians because they believe that Jesus loves them. That's going into the realm of your own philosophy, where I have no jurisdiction except to share my own feelings on matters and debate conclusions based on empirical evidence. I can't scientifically argue against Christians because Christianity isn't a science, it's a religion.
Or, as the test above indicates, it's a cult.

So I'm not trapped by a narrow view of Christians, I choose to address only those who fit the description as being Christians, and everyone else as sheeple, idiots, or people with well-thought-out ideas about the universe around them and how science and the metaphysical possibly work together.
