How did you learn to cook?
I grew up with working parents eating box foods, like Rice A Roni, Hamburger Helper, and Instant Rice/Potatoes/Everything. So it was always a goal of mine to cook real, wholesome food for my family. When I moved out into the dorms at college, I ate hardly anything at all, and if I did it was usually just a sandwich or potato chips. I did, however, live with a culinary student! Every once in awhile she would make amazing dinners full of things I'd never eaten before. I've always had very varied tastes. I love ethnic food and spices. But I never knew it before because all I ate was starch from a box. I jacked my roommates school text books and learned the basics of cooking and seasonings... and then went wild.
I've since finished with school and moved into an apartment with my boyfriend. I don't cook a lot because raw ingredients are kind of spendy, and I'm tired from work... but I have figured it out! I make new things of my own without recipes, now, and boyfriend is always satisfied with the results.
In fact he usually goes into a food coma.
The thing I haven't mastered yet is cooking small amounts. Lol.
So how did you learn how to cook?

from the time i was little, i just loved being in the kitchen, and i would just make things. sometimes i would use recipes and others i would just throw things together. some of my fondest summer memories are of baking in my grandma's kitchen. it would get so hot, but i never cared. i just pull out all the ingredients and lay them out on the counter and pretend i was a master chef. now i cook for all of my friends and i make family dinner every night. and i wish i could cook in small quantities, but i am pretty much feeding an army. i don't really go by recipes as much as i just look at them and get ideas. i love food!

I learned how to cook grilled cheese sandwich just from looking at the damn school cafeteria dudes making them for me all the damn time. I made my first one yesterday and it came out quite good actually, I am pleased with myself. As for real cooking stuff, well I am doing the way of the ramen now, boil water in micro FTW!! Anyways yea I still need to learn how to cook more real food though.

Youre supposed to boil the water on the stove, then add the noodles :/ rofl.

I learned how to cook from my grandma. She can cook anything from scratch, so when I was little, she taught me.
I know how to make anything your heart desires.
I can make pies from scratch (meaning, actually making your own dough for the crust), homemade cakes (no need for cake mix for me), homemade chicken noodle soup (which takes hours to make, but tastes so good), my speical extra hot chilli, and so many other things.

yea stove is nice, but I like micro cuz it seems easier to me, hell at least its not like my sister she actually used to boil the water and noodles in the micro at the same time, then she wondered why they tasted bad :s

My Grandma taught me how to make pies and things, too. But the only thing I remember is Shit on a Shingle.

I remember when I was 11 and I made homemade tootsie rolls. I was just messing around trying to make my own recipe, didn't know what I was making at the time. But I remember, mixing Crisco (which is shortening), some chocolate, and a little bit of vanilla extract and putting it in the oven for maybe 10 to 15 minutes and I took it out and I was like "wtf?! it looks and tastes like tootsie rolls"
