Wilfred
Wilfred
Behold this amputated limb,
Portrayed with tragic synonym,
The tortured youth and cannon's roar,
Behold this corpse upon the floor -
Note how the empty socket jars
When gaped in blackness at the stars,
See how my life's work slickly flows,
Too rich for blood, this bloody prose,
How I, now martyred, murdered art
Behold the bullet in my heart.
Written about Wilfred Owen after I read his wartime letters to Sigfried Sassoon in the back of one of my EngLit texts. A very interesting and eye-opening read for anyone who believes Owen was a war hero.
