Sweeney Todd
Newbie here! Figured I'd start getting familiar with the board...
Before I watched Tim Burton's rendition of the Stephen Sondheim adaptation of the timeless tale of the murdering barber, I read the book. I was quite surprised how much the play/movie DOES NOT parallel the story, aside from Todd & Lovett being in cahoots and a few of the characters' names are the same. But it's a really good book nonetheless.
Anyone else read it?

Not yet, but I've been interested in reading it for a while...

I actually had no idea there was a book before the musical. I have to go out and buy it now. Hah.

I had heard of Sweeney Todd before I heard about the musical, but I had never seen the book, let alone read it. I may do that before I see the movie.

Yeah, there are a few stories about him, from the 1800s or so...his character was inspired by an actual killer-barber in France, I think.

But was he... *puts little finger beside mouth* a demon killer-barber?
*titters and runs away*

haha I didn't either til one of my friends told me she read it and enjoyed it. I figured it'd be a good read, since I generally like reading anything from around the 1800's, so I bought it.
I will say that while the movie had no real effects on me (aside from me singing the songs all the time haha), the book did give me at least one nightmare where I dreamt I was Johanna near the end of the book...and that's all I'll say so I won't spoil the plot lol

Yeah, the Victorian Age is really fun to read about. I especially love steampunk works set there.
I love the songs in the movie! I can't believe I haven't bought the soundtrack yet...I'm going to have to really read the book now, if it's capable of producing nightmares...though hopefully, I won't dream that I'm Johanna...though she's certainly pretty =P
