Freedom

I've been writing about this a lot lately. I do it in the format of short speeches and have filled over 30 pages on word. Some talk rather specifically about certain issues and some are more vague, inspiring (I think) and almost lyrical. I'll start with some of those and add more if anybody likes 'em.

Great American Patriot

It is said that, in the beginning a patriot is hated, reviled and alone. However, as he succeeds many join him as it is easy to be a patriot then. This is not true. It is always hard to be a patriot. Those so-called patriots who board the wagon of change are simply followers and patriots not. A patriot is a person who loves supports and defends his or her country and its interests. The interests of America are Freedom and Liberty and only defenders of these great Pillars of Hope are true American Patriots.

Many have taken an oath to office, swearing to defend this country and it’s Constitution from all threats, foreign and domestic. It is the latter we should be most worried about. A foreign threat is easy enough to spot and guard against. This or that army, the rhetoric of this communist or fascist leader, we see these and seek to protect ourselves. However, we fail to look at ourselves, or rather, those we have elected. These are the greatest threats for they have tasted the prestige, power and joys of public office. They seek to retain them, and not to retain the Freedom of the individual.

The only person with an inherent interest in your Freedom is you. You must guard it dearly as when you let your guard down, that is when your Freedom will be pounced upon by the evils of undeclared and unending wars, extravagant and unchecked spending, and blatant disrespect for the rights guaranteed in our Constitution by such things as the so-called ‘Patriot’ Act.
Those who support such actions tell us it is for our safety. Well, if I must live as a slave to be safe, I’d rather take my chances with Freedom.

A great American Patriot once said, “Give me Liberty or give me Death!” And this is not a bumper sticker or idle rhetoric, no. It was uttered with the aim of bringing Virginia’s militia to arms against the British in the Revolutionary War. This is a way of life. One must at all times, whether soldier or civilian, fight all enemies, foreign and domestic, at whatever the cost, to insure the sovereignty of your individual Freedom above all else.

The man who gives up Freedom for uncertain safety deserves neither. Indeed, nobody can guarantee safety. A terrorist need only succeed once and your life will be torn away, without warning. Better to have lived the life of a free man. However, big government works against your Freedoms. Through taxes and institutions and wars and intervention and departments it curtails your ability to live a life of Liberty in the Pursuit of Happiness.

Pyramids or Freedom?

Alone man is capable of very little. He struggles in his very existence within this world, seeking to survive where he is little fit to do so. Conversely, man who has given himself to society is capable of conquering the elements and creating great monuments that last longer than he will live. The Great Pyramid is one such monument. However, it is one of the most atrocious of such monuments. This is not a great exploit of human cooperation and achievement but a massive and eternal tribute to slavery, oppression and the heartless and inhumane nature of power.

The slaves of Egypt were forced by their Pharaoh to work ceaselessly towards something that did nothing of value for humanity or those men. It was a grave, for Pharaoh and the Freedom of so many men and nothing more than an abuse of power. These are the things we must be ready to subject ourselves to if ever we give up Freedom to the hands of a powerful state.

Man in society can accomplish amazing and unimaginable things. Free men created flight, built the Empire State Building and have made countless other wonders. However, man cannot be forced into such achievements lest he build pyramids. Those who would have us accomplish great feats, not by the choice of using our Freedom for such purposes, but by forcing us to work on their welfare and wealth redistribution and construction; they would make us slaves who build pyramids for Pharaoh. We would no longer serve these great purposes with love and endearment, with joy for the goal we have in mind, but as chores we have no choice but to try and complete at the behest of those in positions of power.

Free men in society can accomplish great things. They can choose to sit by and do nothing, but this is not the nature of most (or at least enough to make a difference) men. If given the chance they will seek greatness and overcome the limits of this existence in whatever manner possible. However, the state will never accomplish great things. It will enslave men and force them to work for the power of the state under guise of some great accomplishment. We must not, no matter how noble the cause may seem, give our Freedom up with the aim of accomplishing something for the good of humanity. Freedom is the only thing that is always in the interest of the individual and anyt

Dichotomy of Freedom

There are two types of ‘free men.’ There are those who enjoy negative freedom, freedom from things such as harm and poverty. Conversely, there are those who are free to do things, such as speak and live. Only the latter enjoy actual Freedom. While they risk harm and poverty more so than the former, they are able to do much more. They are allowed to Pursue Happiness, the only meaningful pursuit of man. Our nation was founded with the knowledge that man can only live happily and prosperously when given Freedom to do so. Negative freedom is not freedom at all, but security which comes from force and power.

Today many of us want freedom from. We want freedom from poverty and terrorists and unemployment and natural disasters and so on. We give up our Freedom to do in order to obtain this. The big, benevolent government promises to keep us out of harm’s way. But they are incapable of this. They cannot stop the weather, they cannot control the market, and they cannot stop every terrorist every time.

We live and we die, there is no way around this. Necessarily, being alive comes with the risk of death, and while the government can mitigate this in some ways, they can never eliminate it. What’s more, the government need not be all-encompassing and omniscient to do so. Having an inherent interest in staying alive, we, individual citizens, often take a great deal of responsibility in ensuring our own safety. We need not give up Freedom to do in order to have freedom from. Indeed, if we do, all we have done is given up Freedom in exchange for nothing. Well, I suppose we do get something in return, the shackles of slavery.
