Selanne rejoins Ducks
January 28, 2008
ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- Following the lead of defenseman Scott Niedermayer, Teemu Selanne has decided to rejoin the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.
Selanne, who had been an unrestricted free agent after playing a key part on last season's Stanley Cup-winning team, signed a one-year contract with the Ducks on Monday.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Niedermayer rejoined the Ducks in mid-December after contemplating retirement. Anaheim has gone 12-5-2 since his return, although the Ducks lost their last three games prior to the All-Star break.
Selanne, 37, registered 94 points for Anaheim last season, finishing third in the league in goals with 48.
"It took Teemu several months to determine if he had the passion and determination to return to the NHL," Anaheim general manager Brian Burke said. "This is a player who scored 48 goals last year and showed no signs of slowing down."
Last season, the Finland native led the Ducks in goals, points, power-play goals (25) and game-winning goals (10). Selanne became the oldest player in NHL history to score more than 45 goals in a season.
In 21 playoff contests, Selanne registered five goals and 10 assists, including an overtime game-winner in Game Five of the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings.
Like Niedermayer, he considered retirement after the Ducks' Stanley Cup victory.
"After skating at Anaheim ICE for the last few weeks, I felt the passion again to play hockey," said Selanne, who will practice with the Ducks on Monday and accompany the team on an eight-game road trip that begins Wednesday in Minnesota. "Anaheim is the only place I wanted to play."
A 10-time All-Star, Selanne has recorded 540 goals and 595 assists in a 14-year career, spent mostly with Ducks. He ranks fifth on the active list in goals.
Selanne has recorded 666 points in 556 games with the Ducks, leaving him three points shy of the team's career scoring record held by Paul Kariya.
