If I were you, to save yourself the heartache, I would make sure all the critical and security updates are installed on your machine, just in case.
Make sure that your graphics driver is updated too.
With regards to the updates, it'll be a long shit but, you may be lucky to download an update to stabliize the operating system enough so that you can run the game.
Otherwise, the only other option I would give you would be to run the game under what is called Compatibility Mode. That in a nutshell is basically running whatever the troublesome application is under a subsystem of Windows XP Service Pack 2. You can do this by right-clicking in the shortcut of the application in question and going into it's properties. From there, navigate to the Compatibility tab and check the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". You have 4 choices of operating systems from there that you can choose from but, your best bet may be running it under Windows 98 since Windows 95 is just too old to begin with, and Windows NT and Windows 2000 are pretty much there to support legacy network applications based on the Windows NT kernel.
