AP/MSNBC: NY law seeks to restrict violent video games

I never thought that New York law could get any more ridiculous in some cases but when I saw this, I couldn't help but feel that i was terribly, terribly mistaken.

Law will create council to study effects of violent games on children

By Michael Gormley
updated 2:12 p.m. ET, Tues., July. 22, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y. - Gov. David Paterson signed a law Tuesday that he said will lead to restrictions on video game violence and help families better monitor grisly games.

The law will create an advisory council to study the effects of violent games on the children. It will also require parental controls on game consoles by 2010 and prominent displays of age ratings on game packages.

But critics say the bill is too vague and too watered down to accomplish its goal. And critics including the group Americans for Tax Reform contend that curbing video violence wasn't really the point in New York or nearly a dozen other states that enacted similar laws, only to see them struck down by courts as unconstitutional.

Complete Story from MSNBC:

There's already parental controls within consoles, aren't there? At least for DVDs...and how can they warn parents any more than they do now? EVERY commercial for games says that game's rating...and how can the ratings be easier to understand? M = Mature, people!!

Every state that's attempted to make this a law is fucking retarded.

Even stores are requiring ID to purchase M rated games. The parents should be the ones controlling the shit going into their homes.

Anywho. I'm pretty sure all three of the new major game consoles have parental control settings, and there's an ESRB rating on every video game cover. What will these tests prove? What will this whole court thing do? Nothing, because everything they want done has already been done.

You didn't catch the sarcasm?

FAIL.

In any case, these laws come and go and never go anywhere. The ratings for games are everywhere. On the packaging, on the commercials, in the newspaper and magazine ads - everywhere. Just lazy ass politicians trying to act like they're "doing something".
