You are now chatting with 'Sean'
Sean: Hello! How can I help you?!
Mitch Larkins: Hey, I had a few questions about applying online.
Sean: Sure! How can I help?
Mitch Larkins: Well, I want to also send in a portfolio as well as letters of recommendation and I was wondering if the application would be reviewed first without those or if whomever is the reviewer would postpone it until they had everything.
Sean: Great Question... if you let your Admission Counselor know that you are sending additional documents, they will hold off on reviewing your file. Just be sure to let them know
Sean: Are there any other questions I can help you with?
Mitch Larkins: Sorry, I was afk.
Mitch Larkins: How would I let them know? Just call?
Sean: It's okay!
Mitch Larkins: Or is e-mail preferred?
Sean: Once you are assigned to an Admission COunselor, they will send you a confirmation email, you can reply to that email
Mitch Larkins: Do I get assigned a counselor once I send in my application>?
Sean: yes.
Sean: They will send you an email once your application is processed
Mitch Larkins: Alright, one last question: I have a webcomic, could that count towards my portfolio if I wished to use it?
Sean: Is it a series?
Mitch Larkins: Yes.
Sean: Do you have a link so I can take a look and give you advice based on that?
Mitch Larkins: As in, a comic with an ongoing storyline? Yes...though the story is proceeding at a snail's pace.
Mitch Larkins: Certainly: The Marvelous Misadventures of Geek Inc
Sean: sounds cool!
Mitch Larkins: I must warn you though first, my art on there has been limited since I don't have the tech to color...such as PhotoShop or a waicom tablet.
Sean: The Marvelous Misadventures of Geek Inc!
Mitch Larkins: lol, yup, I'm a big comic geek at heart.
Mitch Larkins: I have more 'serious' art though that I'll be sending in as well.
Sean: For not having a wacom or photoshop I would say they are pretty decent
Sean: what you have to ask yourself when putting aportfolio together for SCAD is whether or not it is your best work
Sean: just by telling me you have more "serious" work, makes me think you have better... We want to see your BEST!
Sean: 10-20 images
Sean: if you feel 1 or 2 of these comics are part of you best, use them
Sean: If I can give you a suggestion though, I would rework what you feel your best comic is in black ink
Mitch Larkins: I just figured, since some of my intended majors are animation, illustration and writing, that showing that I'm capable of keeping a plot going would help...
Mitch Larkins: I've also published a book as well.
Sean: really?! GREAT!
Sean: well, because you are submitting a portfolio for scholarship and not admission, we want to see your best, no matter what your intended major
Sean: what kind of book?!
Mitch Larkins: Fantasy.
Mitch Larkins: http://www.amazon.com/Untold-Tales-E...7496389&sr=8-1
Mitch Larkins: Here's more of my art works.
Mitch Larkins: Mitch Larkins's Photos - Art-Type Stuff | Facebook
Mitch Larkins: Mitch Larkins's Photos - Nervous Breakdown | Facebook
Mitch Larkins: I'm sorry for bombarding you with all of this, I'm honestly my own worst critic, so I don't really think I have "great" artwork.
Mitch Larkins: All of this is my style without being 'properly' taught how to draw.
Sean: I think your work shows a lot of promise
Mitch Larkins: So, do you think, based on my art alone, do I have a chance at getting accepted?
Sean: your proportions on your characters are pretty spot on
Sean: Sorry, I'm still scanning
Mitch Larkins: That's alright.
Sean: Unfortunately I do not make those desicions
Sean: Have you taken an art class before?
Mitch Larkins: I understand, I just would like someone's opinion that doesn't know me personally.
Mitch Larkins: I've taken a few at a previous college, but I didn't learn anything.
Sean: I'll give you as much feedback as I can
Mitch Larkins: I actually finished those classes a couple of weeks ahead of schedule...
Sean: okay
Sean: cool
Mitch Larkins: I think one of my specialties is speed drawing.
Sean: your work seems mostly to be from your imagination
Sean: I would start working from life
Sean: the best place to start is with your hands
Sean: try to draw your hands and feet and maybe some fruit
Mitch Larkins: Several are actually based on real-life events, just taking them way out of porportion.
Sean: start working from life, so you can train your hand - eye coordination
Mitch Larkins: I've done some of that, those will be the serious examples that I will be sending in.
Sean: awesome! That's a great place to go, especially if you want to head on into sequential art
Sean: okay, good
Mitch Larkins: I prefer the "comicky" style though, I love to focus on humor rather than real-life.
Sean: I think in these drawings you showed me on FBook you can use more tonal range... add more depth and dimension to your characters by adding a broader range of tones
Sean: we are looking for foundation skills, ie. composition, tonal range, design, aesthetics, etc.
Sean: As long as you can show these skills in your portfolio, you should be in good shape
Sean: Get as much feedback on your work as possible
Sean: knwo your audience!
Sean: know*
Sean: Understand that while you may be attached to a piece or a series, your audience may not consider it your best... the more feedback you get, the better you will understand your audience
Mitch Larkins: Exactly why I'm asking for your feedback, because I had no clue exactly what to send until now.
Sean: great!
Mitch Larkins: My audience prefers (my comic readers and whatnot) have preferred my general wackiness than serious works of kettles or shoes.
Sean: And don't rely soley on my feedback, get more... and more... and more
Sean: :-)
Mitch Larkins: My usual audience*
Sean: great!
Mitch Larkins: Well, I think that's every question I had for now.
Sean: now that you know what SCAD is looking for in a portfolio, start putting it all together.
Mitch Larkins: Is there any final parting words o' wisdom?
Sean: Great. If you have any last minute questions when putting your portfolio together, you can email me at smcgee@scad.edu
Sean: Keep pushing your art!!!
Mitch Larkins: Thanks for everything Sean! You've been a massive help!!
Mitch Larkins: Later
Sean: You seem to have the pashion Mitch! Keep pushing it!
Sean: Glad to be!
Mitch Larkins: I'll try ^_^;;
Sean: BEst of Luck!
Mitch Larkins: Thanks again.
So...that feedback seems positive, right? Think I've got a chance at this school?
