Feeling the slight tug against his grip as Léana slowed down, Matthias slowed to a halt and gripped her shoulders, turning them so that she faced him.
"I realize that I haven't been forthcoming on some major points", he said, "but you have to trust me. The last thing you want is the police on your trail".
With a quick glance to check that nobody around would hear them, he started to guide Léana toward the East campus exit.
"In this day and age where pictures and biological ID exist", he said, "you have to stay under the radar, because ten, fifteen years down the road if circumstances find you getting checked out by the police and you look exactly the same as you did today, they'll be onto you. Now that idiot back there", he gestured back to the café, "is not only risking his own life, but everybody's cover. Could you imagine if people today found out about us? History has proved that people kill what they fear -- I know", he leaned in, "I've lived it".
With another glance around, Matthias released Léana's shoulders.
"Look", he said, "I know you've lasted this long without me, but you're going to have to trust me when I tell you that you've been lucky. If someone like psycho back there had found you first, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. You need to come with me so I can teach you the rules".
As he spoke, Matthias ran through the memory of his brief glimpse of the man's face. He'd have to find him again later, before he did a number on everyone.
